The Traction circle: how much grip you're using

Last updated 21 days ago

The Traction circle — sometimes called a "g-g diagram" — plots every moment of your lap as a single dot: how hard you accelerated or braked, against how hard you were cornering, at that same instant. It's the one view a typical lap-timer app doesn't give you, and LapperSnapper computes it from GPS alone, so it works the same on every source — phone, RaceBox, GoPro, or a MyChron — with no accelerometer required.

Where to find it

Open a session and go to the Channels tab — the Traction circle sits above the channel traces.

How to read it

  • Up is acceleration, down is braking. Left and right show cornering grip in each direction.
  • The rings mark g-levels — 0.5g, 1.0g, and so on. A dot sitting on the 1.5g ring means you pulled 1.5g at that instant.
  • Dots are coloured by speed, using the same ramp as the map — so you can spot whether your hardest cornering happens at high or low speed.

Compare against another lap

Use the lap picker above the circle to look at any lap, and the vs picker to overlay a second lap's traction underneath as grey ghost dots — your fastest lap is a good place to start. Where your dots fall short of the ghost, that's grip you left on the table that lap did use.

Tip

The empty space near the edges of the circle — especially in the corners, where you'd brake and turn at once — is grip you haven't used yet. The fuller the circle, the closer you are to the limit.

The Traction circle is free on every plan.
